European Studies Research Programme

European Studies Research Programme - Institute of Culture and History, University of Amsterdam

The research undertaken by the academic staff in European Studies is located in the Institute for Culture and History at the UvA, more specifically in the Research Programme ‘European Studies: Culture, Governance and Identity'. The programme has two prioritized research areas: ‘Nationalism and identity in and of Europe', and ‘National governance and transnational change in Europe'.

Research institutes

ICH - Institute for Culture and History

The Institute of Culture and History seeks to foster disciplinary, interdisciplinary and collaborative research in European culture and history from a historical perspective.

Huizinga Institute - Research Institute and Graduate School of Cultural History

The Huizinga Institute was formally established as a Research Institute and Graduate School in February 1995. It provides postgraduate tuition and encourages research in the field of cultural history.

Research projects

SPIN - Study Platform on Interlocking Nationalisms

SPIN aims to chart the cultural and historical root system of European nationalisms and to bring into focus those intellectual networks which carried and disseminated the emerging ideals of cultural nationalism in the Romantic period and in the long nineteenth century (1770-1914).

Toolkit Europe

Toolkit Europe is a European consortium of universities supported by NWO, including Amsterdam, Utrecht, Tilburg, Ankara, Vienna, Jyvaskyla, San Sebastian and Copehagen researching the issue of language choice in the context of transnational communication.

NWO - Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek
