The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is an internationally oriented, research-intensive university committed to attracting and retaining talented students and staff for excellent research and teaching.
Good Human Resources (HR) policy can make the university a more attractive employer while also helping to promote the European Research Area by enhancing and maintaining Europe's appeal for international researchers.
As part of efforts to build a strong research climate in Europe, the European Commission has formulated a ‘European Charter for Researchers and Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers (Charter & Code)’, setting out 40 basic principles for good HR policy. The Charter & Code cover aspects such as professional attitude and research freedom. Wishing to integrate these principles, the UvA has conducted an extensive internal analysis and developed an HR improvement programme.
The planned improvements fall into two broad categories, spanning more conventional HR topics such as the development of faculty HR policy plans, on the one hand, and extending to the new Standard Evaluation Protocol (including the development of a PhD guide and research data policy) on the other.
The proposed plan of improvement actions has been approved by the European Commission. As a result, the UvA has been rewarded the HR Excellence Logo, signifying recognition of the UvA's HR policy and providing an impetus for continued efforts.
