In Studielink, the name of the Master's programme does not mention the track name. To register for this track in Studielink, first select 'International and European Law' as your study programme. You will be asked to select the specific track during a following step.

1. Check deadlines
Please note that If you would like to be considered for a scholarship, the application deadline is 15 January. Bear in mind that we need all documentation before this deadline.
Please note that the Master’s programmes Public International Law and International Trade and Investment Law do not have a February start.
2. Check entry requirements
To be admissible to the Master's programme in International and European Law: Public International Law applicants need to fulfill the following criteria:
- An academic degree comparable to a Dutch Bachelor of Laws (see 1. ‘Academic background’).
- Proficiency in English (see 2. ‘English Language Proficiency’).
- Motivation and ability to engage with study at an advanced academic level.
- Motivation to actively participate in classes and to put in the work necessary to succeed.
- Affinity or experience with international law.
- Well-developed writing skills.
- Well-developed analytical skills and ability to convey ideas clearly and logically.
A selection procedure applies whereby each application for admission is evaluated by the programme’s Selection Board, which is appointed by the the Programme Director. The Admissions Board of the Faculty makes the final decision for each admission. A phone or video interview with the applicant may be part of the Admission process if the Selection Committee considers this necessary.
Your academic background must include an academic degree comparable to a Dutch Bachelor of Laws:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts & Sciences from any University College in the Netherlands, including at least 45 EC of law courses as part of this completed programme.
- A Bachelor’s degree comparable to a Dutch Bachelor’s degree in European Studies or International Relations, including at least 45 EC of law courses as part of this completed programme.
- A Bachelor’s degree from a research university (Dutch: WO) in another discipline, provided that at least 60 EC of law courses were obtained within this completed programme.
- A Bachelor’s degree in the law track of PPLE (Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics), or comparable education at another research university.
- A Bachelor’s degree from a research university (Dutch: WO) that does not belong to the above-mentioned categories followed by the Dutch-language Pre-Master’s programme (‘schakelprogramma’) International and European Law.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Law from a university in applied sciences (Dutch: HBO-Rechten, CROHO code 39205) followed by the Dutch-language Pre-Master’s programme with ‘civiel effect’ at the Open University (Schakelzone Recht).
All applications will be evaluated on an individual basis.
English language proficiency
In an international environment, sufficient mastery of the English language is critical for academic success. Students must take an English-language proficiency test to demonstrate their ability. The Amsterdam Law School accepts the following tests and test results:
- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) - The minimum required TOEFL score is 100 iBT, with a minimum score of 24 for subscores reading and writing, a minimum of 22 for subscore listening, and a minimum of 25 for subscore speaking. Please make sure to mention our institutional code: 9011 when signing up for the TOEFL test.
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System) - The minimum required overall IELTS score is 7.0, with a minimum score of 6.5 for each individual component.
- Cambridge English Language Assessment: minimum grade C1 Advanced with a minimum score of 190.
- The Amsterdam Law School only accepts English language proficiency test results that are no more than two years old at the time of your start of the programme.
- Chinese applicants need to submit an IELTS or TOEFL iBT test and request a Nuffic certificate.
The following students are exempted from the above-mentioned test requirements:
- Students who have received their prior education in one of the following English speaking countries: Australia, Canada (except Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States.
- Students who possess an international or European baccalaureate diploma (with English as the only language of instruction).
- Students who have completed an English-language study programme (the minimum level is a Bachelor’s programme).
- Students who possess a Bachelor’s diploma from a Dutch research university.

- 3. Submit enrolment application in Studielink
4. Activate your UvAnetID
After submitting your enrolment application in Studielink, you will receive an email with your UvAnetID. Follow the instructions in this email to activate your ID; you will need it to complete your UvA application.
5. Submit your UvA application form
After enrolling in Studielink, you will within 24 hours receive an automated email with a link to your MyInfo UvA application form. To log in to MyInfo you need your UvAnetID. Please fill out the application form, upload the required documents and submit your MyInfo application form before the application deadline.
For this, you need your activated UvAnetID.
Applicants with a non-EEA nationality are charged an administrative fee of €100 to be paid while submitting the application form. The fee is reimbursed to students who subsequently enrol successfully at the Amsterdam Law School and who have started their studies.
A complete online application consists of the following documents:
- Curriculum Vitae.
- A copy of university transcripts including grades (please note: if you have a non-legal Bachelor’s degree, please provide us with an overview of which courses on your transcript are law courses, including a document with course descriptions or syllabi of these courses. You can add these documents to your application after you have submitted your application form, by clicking on the paperclip sign next to your application in MyInfo to add additional documents).
- A copy of university diploma (if it has already been obtained).
- Proof of a passing mark on an English Language proficiency test (if the test has already been taken).
- A motivation letter written by yourself (maximum 600 words):
- setting out your affinity or experience with international law and motivation to participate and succeed in the programme (maximum 300 words, any additional words will not be considered); and
- discussing one current problem or question of international law that triggers your interest in this field of law (maximum 300 words, any additional words will not be considered).
- One reference letter from an academic referee (including his/her contact details). Referees should in any case address in the letter: their relation to the applicant; their opinion on the academic ability, and especially the writing and analytical skills of the applicant, and the participation of the applicant in class; their opinion on the applicant’s motivation to succeed in his or her studies.
6. Request for admission with study delay
Have you suffered a study delay in your current Bachelor’s programme over the past year? Subject to strict conditions, you can submit a request for admission with study delay as of 1 July 2022.
You are eligible to submit a request for admission with study delay when:
- you have a study delay up to a maximum of 15 EC within your Bachelor’s programme provided the courses and exams and/or resits took place in academic year 2021-2022
- you have finished your Bachelor’s thesis (or a comparable final assignment)
- you are enrolled in a Bachelor’s programme at a university located in the Netherlands or in the EU/EEA
- you have applied for the Master’s programme in Studielink and have submitted your application form before the application deadline
You need to complete the pending Bachelor’s courses during the academic year 2022-2023. Therefore, do not forget to re-enroll in your current Bachelor’s programme. Please take into consideration which consequences this might have for your study load. We will not be held responsible for any conflicting schedules between the two programmes.
Submit a request (as of 1 July and before 1 September 2022)
You will need to submit a request for admission with study delay. As of 1 July 2022 you will find the link on this page. Please make sure to submit your request before 1 September 2022.
When submitting the request, you will be requested to upload the following documents:
- a transcript
- a statement from your current university stating that your study delay of maximum 15 EC concerns courses/exams that were taking place in academic year 2021-2022 and that your Bachelor’s thesis (or a comparable final assignment) has been finished
- a statement from your university confirming that the Bachelor’s programme can be completed remotely within the academic year 2022-2023 (for students from outside the Netherlands only).
This regulation applies to applicants who want to start their Master’s programme at the Amsterdam Law School in September 2022 and are enrolled in a Bachelor’s programme at the UvA in 2021-2022, or in a Bachelor’s programme at another university in the Netherlands or in the EU/EEA.
7. Wait for the admissions decision
Once we have received your completed application (and the required application fee for non-EU/EEA students), it will be evaluated by our admissions committee. Only those applicants who fulfil the entry requirements and are therefore eligible to the Masters' programme International and European Law: Public International Law will be presented to the Selection Committee after the application deadline. The Committee will then decide on admission. You will be notified about the decision by email before the 1st of June.
8. Accept/decline acceptance
If you meet all the entry requirements and the Admissions Office has approved your application, the university will send you a letter of acceptance by email. We request that you accept or decline within ten working days. After you have accepted your offer, your application will be further processed. Please note that if you do not respond to your offer after ten working days, there might be a chance your application or your visa request cannot be finalised and you will not be able to complete your enrolment. If you are unsure whether you are able to start your master’s programme, you can also select the option ‘I accept but I have doubts’.
A deferral of your application is not possible. However, you can apply for a next start moment. In case you wish to do so, please withdraw your enrolment request in Studielink. In order to apply for next start moment, please keep in mind that you will need to resubmit both your enrolment in Studielink and your UvA application form before starting the programme. It also means that you have to go through the selection process again and a place in the programme is not guaranteed. The admissions decision will be based on the entry requirements that apply for the academic year in which you wish to enrol.
If you decline acceptance, please do not forget to de-enrol from the Master’s programme in Studielink.
9. Submit certified documents and English test results
If you have been conditionally admitted to the Master's programme, it means that we need to verify your prior academic credentials. You will need to send certified copies of your transcripts and degree certificates. Photocopies or scans of original, certified documents are not accepted.
All documents need to be officially certified (i.e., must bear the original stamp or signature of your university or a notary), and sent to the following address:

If you have completed a legal Bachelor’s programme in the Netherlands, we can verify your prior academic credentials based on the records provided by DUO. If that is the case, you will not need to send certified copies of degree certificates or transcripts.
English test results
If you have not yet sent your English test results yet, please make sure you do so before the deadline.
- TOEFL: When signing up for the TOEFL test, please make sure to mention our institutional code: 9011. If you do not, we cannot verify your results online and you will need to send us the original test results.
- IELTS: Once you have taken the test, you will receive a test report. Please send us a scan of your test report by email so we can verify it online.
- Cambridge English Language Assessment: Please ask Cambridge to ‘share’ your certificate with us so we can verify your test scores online.
10. Pay the tuition fee
You will need to pay the tuition fee in order to complete your enrolment in a degree programme at the UvA. Find out more about how to pay tuition fees. Check your enrolment checklist at sis.uva.nl to see which matters of your enrolment possibly still need to be completed.

12. Request student ID card
A student ID card is a personal document which serves as proof of identity for examinations and library privileges. You will receive instructions explaining how to request your student ID card.
13. Register for courses
After you have been (conditionally) admitted to the LLM programme at the Amsterdam Law School, you will need to sign up for courses during the registration periods indicated on the academic calendar.
Please note: The Amsterdam Law Clinics have a different registration period prior to the course registration period. Check the clinics deadlines.

The academic year is divided into two semesters, each lasting 20 weeks. Semester 1 classes begin in the first week of September. Semester 2 classes begin in the first week of February.

14. Attend Start Appointment
Moving to another city, while exciting, can also be overwhelming. UvA Student Services organizes Start Appointments each year (free of charge) to help with the practical issues you may encounter during your transition to Amsterdam, such as registering with the municipality or opening a Dutch bank account. You will receive an invitation for a Start Appointment once you have submitted your immigration application. There are two levels of Start Appointment: all-inclusive and regular.
