Sustainability and Economics

With climate change, deforestation, biodiversity loss and other major environmental concerns, sustainability has become a hot topic for international organisations and governments all around the world. This interdisciplinary minor will equip you with the necessary tools from economic, environmental and political approaches to acquire a general understanding of the subject and to analyse, evaluate and propose environmental policy and governance measures.

What will you learn in this minor?
After successfully finishing this minor, you will have acquired thorough knowledge on the theoretical and practical applications of Sustainability and Economics.  You can use this to participate in and contribute to policy discussions.

Moreover, you will obtain an understanding of the (dis)advantages of a variety of policies measures, discuss possible implications and can guide dialogues about these topics towards a better and more sustainable world. Students who take this minor will have a competitive edge when seeking employment in the field of sustainability in the private sector, public sector, NGOs and international organizations.

Programme

The minor contains of 30 EC and can be completed in one semester. It includes the five compulsory courses of 6 EC each.

Period 2 Environmental Economics
  Green Economy and Society (new)
Period 1, 2 & 3 Degrowth

You can find the programme and detailed course descriptions of the current academic year in the Course Catalogue. Please note that the content of the courses may be subject to change. The new course catalogue containing the final programme will be published in the beginning of June.

Entry requirements

  • Successful completion of the first year of a research university Bachelor's programme (WO) or University of Applied Sciences programme (HBO) is required for participation.
  • This minor is not open to students who have already completed one of the courses as part of their Bachelor’s programme.
  • No prior knowledge in Economics or Politics is required.
  • This minor is open to students of UvA Economics and Business.

Application and Admission

Thank you for your interest in our minor programme. Unfortunately, the minor has reached its capacity and the waiting list is also full. For alternative minors, we recommend you to take a look at our website.

This minor has a limited capacity and works on a first come first serve basis. Please note that your can only apply for one minor at the Faculty of Economics and Business. All other applications at our Faculty will not be taken into consideration.

What do you need to apply?

All students

  • a short motivation to be copied in the application form

Non-UvA students:

  • Latest 11 May: Sign up as an elective student (bijvak student) for Bachelor's in Economics and Business Economics in Studielink. Important: make sure that your start date is 1 September 2021.
    You will not be able to sign up for the minor without enrolment.
  • a signed and stamped transcript of grades. We understand that due to the corona crisis it might be difficult to provide us with a certified transcript. Therefore, as an exception, we will also accept non-certified transcripts for the minor applications. We rely on your integrity.
