The programme curriculum approaches international development, or contestations thereof, in multiple realms (including grassroots, public and private sectors, and global institutions) and explores the interaction among unequal power relations between diverse rural and urban, local, national and international actors and processes, within context-specific institutional settings.
Research Master's programmes are two-year programmes specifically designed for excellent students wishing to pursue a career in research or in policy and/or other organisation that require strong research skills. These programmes include additional research methodology and skills training, as well access to top research groups of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research. The programmes prepare students for writing a PhD thesis and following an academic career, as well as for a research oriented career outside academia. The Research Master International Development Studies, in particular, also prepares students for potential careers in government agencies, non-governmental organisation, and consultancy agencies requiring a sound background in research.
