Leadership and Management (MSc Business Administration)

Opslaan in favorieten

How can managers make more effective decisions? This is the core question you will learn how to answer in the Leadership and Management track. This track is one of 9 tracks you can opt for in our Master's in Business Administration.

Help bring people to organisational success

Human capital is increasingly important for organisations to be competitive. How do you manage employees and teams effectively? Which leadership styles should you use? Familiarise yourself with important theories and research results on these crucial issues to help you make your own decisions as a future manager.

You will apply the latest insights on leadership and management to real-world cases, making sure that you get sufficient practice in analysing and solving issues in a structured manner. Presenting your advice to the company in question makes the assignments extra challenging.

Track-specific courses

  • Theories of Leadership and Management

This course gives you the theoretical framework for understanding how to lead and manage people toward organisational success. You will learn what drives individual performance as well as how, when, and why people succeed or fail together in groups and organisations.

  • Leadership

This course gives you an insight into current knowledge on leadership. We will focus on the major outcomes of leadership in terms of employee motivation and behaviour and discuss the ethical considerations and requirements for leadership.

We will also cover real-life examples, practical implications and of course in-depth research in leadership. A critical and motivated attitude is key, as we ask for independent as well as interactive participation.

  • Managing People Strategically

What does it mean to manage people strategically? What choices does this entail? In this course, you will become familiar with up-to-date management theories.

For example: how do organisations gain a competitive advantage through their employees? And what impact does this have on them? Expect interactive sessions in which you participate in discussions, work on case studies and train different managerial skills.

Real-life case: autonomous teams at bol.com
Bol.com is the largest e-retailer in the Netherlands and Flanders. The company has started the SCORE programme to improve the way store teams cooperate with other professional disciplines in multidisciplinary autonomous teams. How can management support autonomous teams in effectively delivering on their goals, while at the same time giving them enough autonomy?

Contemporary issues

  • Google ranks highly among the ‘best companies to work for’. The multinational offers employees a wide range of extras: a complete playground to spend your work breaks, a mind-blowing workspace and luxury lunch menus. Why does Google do this? How does this help achieve organisational goals? And could this work for other companies?
  • ING and many others are switching to ‘agile working’, leaving their hierarchic structure behind to implement self-managing teams. What consequences does this have for leadership and management? How do you secure an effective work mode, high motivation and focus on the common organisational goal?

Career prospects

Graduates of the Master's in Business Administration/Leadership and Management track have excellent job prospects for positions in a wide variety of Dutch and multinational companies, for example as:

  • consultants
  • managers
  • management trainees
  • business analysts
  • people analytics managers
