My research interests and teaching are in industrial organization, competition policy and regulation, in particular public and private enforcement. The integration of law into my economic analyses, I find particularly fruitful in understanding social issues of market design. In the MSc programs of the Amsterdam School of Economics, I coordinate the tracks Markets & Regulation and Competition Law & Economics. In the Amsterdam Law School LLM program, I lecture a series on the economics underlying the LLM program European Competition Law and Regulation. In addition, I teach the introductory first-year course Principles of Economics & Business to all incoming students in Economics and Business Administration.
My recent papers consider banking competition, public interest benefits of collusion, the dating of cartel effects, Libor/Euribor manipulation, and priority setting by government agencies. Previous work is widely published with international publishing houses and in national and leading international journals. Our research regularly attracts the attention of popular media and investigative journalism. I served in several public functions, including as Non-Governmental Advisor to the European Commission and Deputy Economic Counsel to the Board to the Dutch competition authority (ACM). Occasionally also, I act as an expert on complex competition litigation matters.
