Study programme

Programme outline

The programme consists of four core courses and one elective course in the first semester. The core courses focus on

  • contemporary topics in medical anthropology and sociology,
  • social science theory as applied to health issues,
  • how to translate MAS related insights into all sorts of practices, health and development,
  • and research design.

Students also take one elective course in a domain of health that relates to their research interests. These Winter Programmes take place in January and are also open to other students.

The programme is completed with a fieldwork of 8-10 weeks and a thesis in the second semester.

The Master's thesis (15 ECTS) is based on qualitative research carried out by the student under supervision of a faculty member. Students design their own research projects and conduct their own fieldwork (12 ECTS), in the Netherlands or abroad. They may also connect their individual projects to the research activities of staff members, or to current PhD projects within the department.

Degree requirements

Upon successful completion of the coursework and the fieldwork and thesis project, students will receive an officially accredited Master’s degree in Medical Anthropology and Sociology and the title Master of Science.
