Latin American Studies

Latin American Studies focuses on the society, culture, politics and history of Latin America: a complex and multi-faceted region that is not always easy to understand. Farreaching economic reforms and rapid urbanisation coexist with peasant societies. Democratic and authoritarian tendencies exist side by side in politics, and often lead to surprising results and outcomes.

The minor in Latin American Studies is aimed toward the study and research of these current developments in Latin America, as well as their historical background. We discuss how important processes reshape Latin America, including questions related to globalisation and local responses. Themes are approached from different disciplinary angles, bridging the Humanities and Social Sciences, and including theories and methodologies from cultural anthropology, human geography, political science and history.
